My Instagram Got Hacked!
So I woke up today to find that I couldn’t log onto my Instagram account.
I think I either got hacked or someone at IG hugely screwed up.
There’s Even an Imposter Page!
My friends sent me a screenshot of an imposter page.
See screenshot below. WHO THE HECK IS THIS GUY!?!?!
Who is @timtimskin?
This isn’t me!
So do not give him your info or interact with him; because I think he may try to impersonate me in order to scam you!
Trying to Contact IG Makes the DMV Look Good
Have you noticed that IG doesn’t even have a customer service phone number?
I just found that out today, the hard way.
I’ve been trying to get a hold of them all day long and there’s just no way easy way to do it!
I’ve sent multiple emails, and no one’s gotten back to me. It’s pretty frustrating!
I’m Hearing This Happens Quite Often
I’ve heard that this happens fairly often. I know a few people who are influencers and they’ve shared with me that similar things have happened to either them or people that they know. Even celebrities have this happen to them from time to time.
One guy who I talk fairly regularly with has about 2M followers, and he’s had his page disabled for a month. He told me there’s another guy he knows that had his account hacked and it took him a year to get it back up!
And lastly, one other guy I spoke over the phone with today, said that the same thing happened to him because IG thought he was under-age (can’t be younger than 13 years old), so he had to prove that he was 23 years old by submitting his drivers license and a ton of forms to get them to set their account back up.
Please Make Sure You’re Subscribed to the Blog!
So yeah, I guess this is another reason why it’s so important to make sure everyone subscribes to the blog itself!
Because any social media platform can go poof one day, and go away. Or the account can get hacked.
And by being subscribed directly to the blog, you can make sure you can always tune into new articles, resources, and posts that I put up.
It’s the only platform that I have as close to a “direct” influence over since it’s my own website.
Relying Too Much On One Platform is a Mistake!
Nothing lasts forever. I remember the days of Xanga and MySpace. Those days are long gone. The same can, and will, happen with YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Periscope, etc. It’s just a matter of time.
So for my blogging community friends, especially, make sure you’re not relying just on Twitter and Pinterest (the two most common platforms being used within the blogging community, from what I’ve seen).
So What Now?
I’m going to continue contacting IG to make sure they can get my account back up. It took me over 2 years to accumulate 200K followers, so it won’t be fun to start from scratch. And even strictly from a monetary standpoint, from all the give-aways I’ve done to grow my audience, I’ve probably spent over $20 – $30K.
So it would be quite a bummer if all of that was for nothing.
I guess it’s not the end of the world, but I think what I’m most concerned with is that all the people that have been previously following my IG account, won’t even know that I didn’t take down my own account.
Because only a very small fraction of my IG followers actually visit my blog. So everyone else will think that either I got hacked or won’t know where else to go to engage with me.
That’s what’s the most saddest for me!
There’s just no good way to let them know to come visit over at my blog, or over at my twitter, or youtube, or facebook page if they don’t know what any of these are.
Please Pray that I can get my IG Account Back Up!
Prayers would be appreciated! Thanks!
Has anything like this happened to you before? Or to someone you know? How did you handle it, not strictly from an action-plan standpoint, but from an emotional and mental standpoint because it’s pretty terrifying! Let me know if you have any ideas or thoughts!
