Side Hustle Your Way to Freedom
Side hustle your way to freedom. You owe it to yourself. Because gone are the days of staying at one job for 40 years.
The days where you could plop down at one company and rely on just one source of stable income and a hefty pension to look forward to at the finish line. All that is long gone.
But because of these changes, side hustles are becoming more and more popular in today’s society. Especially among the millennial cohort. It’s also being referred to as “the gig economy”, I’m sure you’ve heard of this term being thrown around quite a bit. It’s where folks either have multiple part time jobs, or one primary job sprinkled with a copious amount of moonlighting on the side.
And so, even though there was a loss in guaranteed benefits (as the jobs landscape has changed over the years), one major positive thing that’s come out of all of the technological progress we’ve been making, is just how easy it has become to participate in generating side income (i.e. Uber/Lyft, freelancing, online business, etc). It’s also never been so easy to get in front of so many potential customers, due to the rise of the internet.
To give you an idea, 3.6 billion people are connected to the internet, globally. So that’s 3.6 billion potential customers that might find value in whatever product or service you’re selling! That’s nuts! So no longer are you tethered to marketing to a small local market and having to solely rely on foot traffic like the old days. The fact is: mom-and-pop shops are dying. Amazon and its’ behemoth fulfillment infrastructure is the new way to purchase goods. And everyone’s scrambling to adjust to all of the changes that are occurring in consumers’ expectations and buying habits.
It’s happening in my industry (I work in the door, gate, and home automation industry). It’s happening everywhere I look. I’ve been at my company for about 8 years. But I’ve always done side hustles. It’s a part of who I am. Even in college. Working summers on campus, and taking on clients as a personal trainer in the evenings and weekends often working between 70-80 hours a week. I do this to this day.
My side hustles + passive income streams that I’ve painstakingly built over the years, have grown to generate between $5,000 – $7,000 per month for my family. Mind you, this is all extra gravy; it’s all additional income we’re getting on top of our primary “9-5” jobs.
I look back and it has all been worth it. And it’s still worth it for me to continue. Casting a wider net. Trying out different things. Tinkering with new ideas. Prototyping and trying new iterations of what’s been done. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it’s rewarding in so many ways. Not just financially (congrats! You stumbled upon hint #2 for the 8/6/18 cash giveaway! Hint is: my first car was a silver 1997 vehicle, US made!).
All of the side hustles are also what’s allowed me to hit a combined six-figure income relatively early in life. I think it was age 26 when I crossed that threshold. Not the earliest it’s been done; but hey, I’d say that’s fairly early for most. So I implore you. Spend some time sowing today, so that you can reap a bountiful harvest later. If you don’t have something you’re working on, in the evenings and on weekends, building multiple sources of income for yourself, you’d better pin your hopes on Universal Basic Income (UBI) becoming a reality.
The beginning is always the hardest; so having presented my case, what say you? What are some of your side hustles?
If you don’t have any currently, is there anything you’ve been mulling over in the past few months?
